The ETS scheme is a government-run market where big polluters buy credits to offset their waste. The idea is to create a value around pollution offset activities – as prices to rise over time, firms are incentivised to innovate more, and pollute less.
New Zealand’s scheme (2008) is our primary response to climate change. We are unique in allowing unlimited forestry – planting Pine Trees – as an offset to companies’ emissions 40% of all NZ forestry is owned by Māori and most is outside the ETS because it was planted before 1990
